Business Spotlight: {Cali Party Bus}

Cali Party Bus San Diego, operated by The California Experience LLC, a state-wide luxury transportation company that services every party city from San Francisco to Los Angeles and San Diego, is bringing affordable luxury transportation with a nightclub atmosphere right up to your doorstep. Owners Matt Berger and Brett Larson aren’t your typical company founders. These twenty-something guys were originally inspired by international backpacking tourism trends when living abroad, and when back in the states, they turned their vision into one of the largest party bus companies on the West Coast. From custom hand-made vehicles that feature cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line luxury amenities, to a hyper-local hand on the pulse of the industry in every city of operation, Cali Party Bus is an incredibly unique company that transforms the transportation industry with every ride.
The Party Bus Background: California natives Matt Berger and Brett Larson met overseas in Thailand in 2005, working with relief organization Help International to rebuild homes damaged by the tsunami. While traveling across the globe together, they learned about a backpacking bus tour popular with tourists, and become inspired to translate the business model back home in California. In December of 2007, they launched the company with one 20 person bus in San Diego. Cali Experience now 11 limo and party buses statewide, servicing San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Matt explains the diverse Cali Party Bus business in San Diego:
“Our clientele ranges from tweens at high school dances to Greek formals and exchanges at UCSD and SDSU, to senior citizens going to casinos. We are very active in the post-grad market, working with promotion companies to run party buses downtown from PB. We also specialize in corporate events, temecula wine tours, and weddings. People are starting to recognize that there are now many different kinds of transportation options available, and the ride from A to B can be just as enjoyable an experience the venue they are going to.” And after riding on one of their buses you can see why. Fully loaded with lazer shows, fog machines, cieliengs that change color, and mega sound systems, some of these buses rival the nightclubs themselves.
Free Rides? True or False
Berger explains how CPB have joined forces with some of San Diego’s top venues to offer affordable and sometimes FREE rides downtown to and from Pacific Beach and SDSU. “Depending on the night, CPB has strategic partnerships with local promotions companies to bring people from the beach areas to downtown clubs for free!” From Club 207 and Float at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, Stingaree, Sidebar, Vouyer and the all newFLUXX, Cali Party Bus has exclusive agreements with San Diego’s premiere destinations
“When the recession hit we had to get creative in how to get people out of their comfort zones.” Says CPB San Diego Operations Manager Kadie Stamper, “We knew people still wanted to party and be downtown, but the $40+ roundtrip taxi ride was becoming a real barrier. Now we bring upt to 250 people a night to venues downtown.”

Industry Spotlight - Erik Sadlicki {Longboard's & Johnny V's}

Job Position?
I bartend at Longboards and Johnny V's in PB. I have also been known to do a little guest bartending around town at places like The Double Duece and Millers Field on occasion.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Chicago, but I have been living in PB since 2004. Needless to say I will not be moving back.
What’s your specialty drink?
Anything I can make at lightning fast speed! I love a high volume environment. I've been told I make a mean old fashioned and a killer cadillac margarita, but prefer not to make them if I'm slammed!
What’s the best part of your job?
Would it be shallow if I said the money is the best part? All joking aside, I do enjoy the social nature of my job, the flexible hours and the fact that I'm not sitting behind a desk all day. I really like all of the people I work with too.
How would you describe your bar to someone who’s never been there?
Longboards is a surf themed bar with great food, a great crowd and live entertainment most every night. We are a Boston affiliated bar, so we get crazy for Boston sporting events! Sunday night reggae is awesome. The nights we don't have a live band, Monday and Wednesday, we have lots of things to keep you entertained such as Wii bowliing, Beer Pong, and a DJ. It is a pretty relaxed environment with a great vibe and great people.
Johnny V's is more of a nightclub, we have DJ's every night, and usually have insane drink specials that pack the place. Friday night for example from 4 to 10 P.M. we have $2 well drinks and domestic beers, everything else is half-off, and each drink comes with a free mini appetizer. Then from 10 to midnight we still have $2 wells and domestic drafts. Its an insane deal! The DJ's are usually spinning a mix of house, hip-hop and top 40, making the dance floor go off! There are always free pool tables and places to chill in the front if you aren't into dancing.
What’s your favorite Pub Crawl theme?
I'm engaged so I can't really answer any of the ones with girls in sexy outfits, so I'm going to go with the 300 person Santa Claus pub crawl that I encountered last December. That was pretty cool.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
Like most industry people I enjoy drinking. That should be no suprise, however I also play drums and guitar, and I paint. As of late I've been trying to focus more on the music and art part of my free time. I'm a very novice golfer but I enjoy getting on the course once in a while. I like to cook too.
What are 3 words to best describe you?
I'm not good with these type of questions but I'll give it a shot. Um, friendly, artistic and efficient I guess.....
What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
That I broke my neck in 4 places in a freak hit and run bike accident a couple of years ago. I healed up pretty well, so you can't tell, and I'm very thankful to still be walking! Sometimes I want to break it again though, you'd be amazed what kind of tips you get bartending in a neck brace ha ha!
What’s your favorite website?
I hate to admit it, but Facebook. I can't get away from this thing even if I try! Its on my phone, its in my living room, its everywhere! It is a great promotional tool for the industry though, so for that I am thankful.

Where are you from?
South Jersey
What’s the best part of your job?
Interacting with the customers
How would you describe your bar to someone who’s never been there?
RT's Longboard Grill is a really rad bar. It has an interesting history as to how it came about. Everyone that works there is like a family and our regulars become part of our family too. The employees are funny and friendly. Longboards has great live music, not your normal PB club atmosphere, Thursdays are usually newer local bands, Fridays are usually 80's inspired bands, Saturday is always different but usually another cover band, and Sundays is Reggae Sunday (most popular bar on Sundays in PB). Longboards is a chill bar for sure. It was one of my favorite bars to go to before I was hired. Their food is great too. Cob tacos are amazing, burgers are stellar, and Wednesdays build your own pasta deal is food coma status. Every night is something different, you could go to Longboards every night and have a blast with a different crowed and still see familiar faces. Mon is game night, Tues is taco tues and open mic (I paint live on stage), wed is happy hour al day and beer pong tournaments after 9 and dj famous dave on wed too, thurs-sun is live music. Ya just cant beat the atmosphere at Longboards... just go. You wont regret it.
What’s your favorite Pub Crawl theme?
I saw a funny one come through once that was themed around what children would want to be when they grow up which was cool because I saw some crazy astronauts, cooks, teachers, firemen and things of that nature. Some people were lazy and just bought a slutty firemen outfit but some people actually looked at the costume from a kids point of view and made the costume creative and funny.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
Art. I'm just working in the bar industry to pay bills. I went to college, and moved to California to do Character Design and Flash Animation. I paint live at longboards, and around San Diego also to pay bills and get my name out there more.
What are 3 words to best describe you?
Friendly, Goofy, Caring.
What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
I just pumped my own gas for the first time in my entire life, yesterday. (It's illegal to pump your own gas in NJ) honest. There are no self service gas pumps there.

It's a Retro-American-Chic version of the original Firehouse Cafe that used to be in the same location. It bridges the gap between the swanky Miami-style lounges & the warm cozy vibe of Pacific Beach. There is no other place like it in PB, you can sit around the firepit and relax with a cocktail in one of our rocking chairs or in the super comfy patio couch.
